RCR training

NSF RCR Training Requirements:

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training is required by all undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and other senior personnel supported on National Science Foundation Awards (NSF).

UCF has selected the online RCR training course offered by CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) to meet the NSF RCR training requirement.

Employees required to complete the RCR training will be identified through payroll records and automatically enrolled in Workday course RCR100. The course provides instruction on how to complete the training via the CITI portal, sends out reminder notices and provides a mechanism for recording the completed training in the employee's Workday record.

All non-employee undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty and other senior personnel who are supported by NSF awards through a scholarship or fellowship are identified through a monthly report pulled from the Research Data Warehouse (RDW). A Research Compliance Specialist from the Office of Compliance will contact the NSF supported individual via email with instructions on how to complete the training via the CITI portal.

The RCR CITI training must be completed within 60 days of being assigned to the NSF project and every three years thereafter. If the NSF-supported individual does not complete the training within 60 days of being assigned to the NSF project, the Principal Investigator (PI) of the award will be notified to remove the individual and the associated payroll or participant charges from the project. If the NSF-supported PI does not complete the training within 60 days of being assigned to the NSF project payroll, the project will be placed on hold until training is current.

The NSF requirements can be found at https://www.nsf.gov/bfa/dias/policy/rcr.jsp.

NIH RCR Training Requirements:

National Institutes of Health requires RCR training for trainees, fellows, participants, and scholars receiving support through any NIH training, career development award, research education grant, and dissertation research grant.  The format may include online training (i.e. CITI RCR), but must also include at least 8 hours of face-to-face discussions among the participating trainees/fellows/ scholars/ participants. NIH indicates “a combination of didactic and small-group discussions (e.g. case studies); and participation of research training faculty members in instruction in responsible conduct of research are highly encouraged.” Training plans should include each of the generally accepted RCR core subject areas (i.e. conflict of interest, use of human and animal subjects in research, mentoring, collaborative research, peer review, data management, research misconduct, authorship and publication ).  All Individualized RCR Training sessions must be acknowledged and documented using the Individualized RCR Training Completion Form available at here  for record keeping and auditing related purposes by the university and/or the sponsoring agency.

For questions or additional information relating to the conduct of Individualized RCR Training, please contact the RIC-RCR Training staff at rcr-ucf@ucf.edu.

The NIH Requirement for Instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research Notice can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/not-od-10-019.html.

Online RCR Training in CITI:

The Office of Research provides free access to RCR training via the CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) online program for all UCF employees and students. CITI can be accessed through the Office of Research website SSO (Single Sign On) portal using their NID and NID password.

All undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and senior personnel required to completed CITI RCR training should choose 1 of the 6 RCR courses that best fits their field/discipline:  Biomedical, Engineering, Humanities, Physical Science, Social and Behavioral, or Administration.  After the training course modules are completed, CITI provides the user with a completion certificate. The user must email a copy of their completed training certificate to rcr-rcr@ucf.edu. Upon receipt of the completion certification, the RCR training requirement will be marked as complete.

See Accessing CITI RCR Training for instructions on how to access CITI.
